Van Cleef & Arpels' latest high jewelry collection, 'Fascinating Egypt', is a stunning exploration of ancient Egyptian aesthetics and symbolism. This collection is not just a mere revisit of a theme, but a deep dive into the timelessness inspired by Egyptian culture. The CEO, Catherine Rénier, emphasizes the brand's approach to going beyond the surface-level interpretation of a culture, delving into the symbolism and timelessness instead. What makes this collection particularly fascinating is the way it plays with ancient Egyptian iconography while also pushing boundaries with modern interpretations. One of the key aspects of this collection is its use of color. The studio took inspiration from ancient pieces where pigments have remained surprisingly vivid, as evidenced in museums such as the Louvre and the Museo Egizio of Turin. This led to a broad palette that encompasses the four traditional precious stones, as well as lapis lazuli, chrysoprase, turquoise, and even morganite. The designs are complex and intricate, with lapidary constructions that showcase the beauty of these stones. For instance, the earrings feature a delicate gradient of three tones of coral, while the clips play on irregular outlines, featuring pieces of papyrus or stone, layered with geometric slices of turquoise, coral, or lapis lazuli. The collection also features abstract directions, such as the Aube d'éternité cuff bracelet, which is a yellow gold frame supporting diamond-set white gold and platinum filigree motifs, and the Heures du Soleil pearl sautoir necklace, which evokes the journey of Ra on his solar barque. The Princess du Nil choker, with its 107 carats' worth of teardrop-shaped emeralds and matching elongated natural pearls, is another highlight. This choker is a nod to the Art Deco 'Collerette' necklace acquired by Princess Faiza of Egypt in 1937. The Déesse Ailée Mystérieuse necklace, or 'mysterious winged goddess', is another standout piece. It is an evocation of Maat, who reigned over justice, truth, and order, with stylized graphic bands that curl around the neck. The mystery set technique enhances the effect, particularly in the alternating rectangular diamonds and rubies that lead the eye to the off-center pear-shaped motif with its 14-carat DFL Type 2A diamond. This collection is not just a celebration of ancient Egyptian aesthetics, but also a statement of intent for Van Cleef & Arpels. As the brand turns 120 this year, 'Fascinating Egypt' doubles as a testament to its commitment to building tomorrow's patrimony. The collection showcases the brand's creativity expressed in continuity throughout the decades, with each chapter nourishing the history of the house. Clients can recognize themselves over a long timeframe in the expression of the house, with a respect for heritage, a lot of know-how, and a certain stability in their creations. Even the growing number of brands eyeing the high jewelry segment doesn't phase Rénier. She sees it as an opportunity to bring greater visibility to the marvelous know-how and creative expression that high jewelry can offer, demonstrating that these know-hows have a long life and a long purpose. In my opinion, Van Cleef & Arpels has successfully captured the essence of ancient Egypt in this collection, while also pushing the boundaries of modern jewelry design. The use of color, symbolism, and abstract directions creates a truly captivating and timeless collection that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on the jewelry world.
